Living In Jerome
Living in Jerome the past eight years has been an adventure in the dynamics of human interaction. I have viewed a never ending parade of unusual personalities come and go from this community on the side of the hill. While I am never at a loss for the reasons one would move here, I am always suprised at the diversity of people who do. I myself moved here for a combination of the history of the town, the climate here at 5,300 ft and the views that I have from my front porch. Jerome is a community like no other I have found in my travels throughout the USA. I love it!
We visited Sedona & Jerome last year & had a nice time. Sedona is what it is, but we enjoyed a side-trip to Jerome and visited with the lady, formerly from Los Angeles area, who owns/operates the Twin Star. I have a Twin Star shirt on now. We would like to retire in northern AZ area or Tahoe areas. Flagstaff, Scottsdale area is appealing. I will need to research Cottonwood., as it seems just like another Victorville or Barstow, CA. We bought property last year in Ash Fork, which is just West of Williams. We bought the first 4 acres and then went back and bought another 3. In the Kaibab Estates. Our property backs up to the Kaibab National Forest!! It's fabulous!!! Can't wait to move out there when we retire in 4 years. As a matter of fact we're going in December to see what the weather is like then. We're trying to do all the seasons before we actually move out there. But I have a feeling we'll be VERY happy!!

I to love Jerome and that whole area. I would love to own a shop one day up in Jerome and semi retire. My husband and I bought property in Cottonwood to build on and retire to but due to the econome we are trying to sell the property. It is a very nice half acre in Clarkdale/Cottonwood in a established subdivision. If you are still interested in researching cottonwood I would love for you to at least take a look at our property.

We live in Northern AZ and visit Jerome about every other month. When we have visitors who have never been to Jerome, we love to bring them there for lunch and a little shopping. They are always stunned by the beautiful views, and rich history. It is truly a unique city that we choose to visit regularly. The annual Ghost Walk in October is an event that shouldn't be missed. We have made it a tradition for our family.

I, too have always been throttled by my previous dozen or so visits. My son bears "Jerome" as his middle name due to my many varied and wonderful experiences in your town. See you this weekend!

We vistited Jerome this past weekend and brought in the New Year at The Spirit Room. Met some wonderful people there (Keebler and Chris) who made us feel right at home and loved all of the shops, restaurants, and historical places as well. We will be going back, without a doubt. Everyone should experience Jerome. There's no other place like it !!

Hi - Would anyone know of a "place" that one could "dig" for some kind of stone ( such as turquoise) as an individual? My sister and I are looking for a little fun adventure, not a business.

I love, love Jerome. It's addicting. I was there last March during the snow. I never felt so close to Heaven. The view is breathtaking, no matter which direction you are looking. I am coming back this year and bringing my four kiddos. Anyone know of a SOLID place I can build a retirement home there?

I remember traveling thru Jerome on trips to Oklahoma. I was last there in 1959. Remember David the old miner that had several burros for picture taking. I also remember the old print shop with all of the old hot metal printing equipment of a bygone era. I would like to return for a visit and possibly ride a mule. I also have a large collection of antique wood printing type that I would like to sell or possibly donate to the City of Jerome. Feel free to contact me via e-mail at: daitken47@yahoo.com

My wife Cheryl and I along with our friends Bill and Melvina Culbreath of Atlanta, Georgia visited Jerome by accident on 4/25/2007 and ended up spending the day. The folks are warm and friendly and we all agreed Jerome was our favorite town in Arizona. We especially enjoyed visiting Tracy & Nancy Weisel at Raku Gallery, Rosemarie at Spirit Art Gallery and lunching at the Asylum. I suspect Jerome will lose its ghost town status in the near future. We hope to be back in the near future.

A friend of mine I grew up with in Phoenix moved to Jerome in 1974 with his parents to open a restaurant well it's now called the Jerome Palace.I don't remember what they named it back then..But I went to his wedding which was in the park next to the restaurant.A lot of Hippies in those days and dogs too.I slept in a lower bungalow below the out door patio which exists now.My wife and I drove up there a few years ago and stayed at the Grand Hotel and took the train ride in Clarkdale,it was a package deal..Last time I was Jerome in 1974 the hotel didn't exist it was an old abandon building.Bob Dylan was right The Times They Are A Changing. I was a 17 yr old runaway living in Jerome in early 1974.I stayed with an incredibly kind man who operated a healthfood store and crafted jewelry.I often wonder what happened to him.Does anyone there know if he still resides there.I believe his nickname may have been "Ernie" or something similar.the nickname was based on some obscure little film he and his friend made concerning capturing the states on a cross country oddysey.I would like to thank him for his incredible kindness to me.cburt580@yahoo.com

If his mom's name is Susy and(I can barely remember)she had short blond hair. The restaurant was the Candy Kitchen. We almost lost him out in Oak Creek Canyon in the spring of '73 or thereabouts. I think his name begins with a "J" and was 2.5 to 3 yrs old then.

I went to a restaurant on Sunday around 5:00 PM this restaurant was just down the street from the ice-cream pallor, maybe three doors or so down, they serve an excellent quiche.
I lost the business card and would like to know the name of that restaurant; they have a huge 8’ mirror that looks like it is falling. Could anyone get me that name?

Jerome is like no other place you will ever visit. The location, view, history are all incredible. Just be mindful of your speed when entering the town...the police are very "active" when it comes to writting tickets! I know.....I encountered "Barney Fife" when I was stopped.

I have a dear friend who has years of experience as a jewelry designer, and has worked in many capacities in and around that industry. Unfortunately, she lives in a part of the country where the economy is depressed. That, along with a robbery that cleaned out her (unfortunately uninsured) studio, has left her for some years firmly in the category of "starving artist."
I have spoken to her highly of Arizona, and my sense that the opportunities here are much better, but I am not a member of the artistic community and don't really know how. I am hoping that perhaps someone reading this blog might be willing to talk to me and/or her a bit about what life is like (not only in Jerome), and what opportunities for employment might exist in the area.
She is a lovely, delightful woman who brings light to any room that she enters. Your thoughts would be greatly and sincerely appreciated.

I lived in Jerome in 1981, at the Central Hotel, where my son was born.
He was delivered by Ivy, the midwife there at the time. I would like to reconnect with her and say hello..

Regarding Jerome around 1890's.
My grandfather worked on the construction of the Catholic Church in Prescott and Jerome - or so the story goes.
Is there a catholic Church in Jerome? If so where could I find some history about it.
Thanks, Tony

Yes there is a Catholic Church in Jerome
I was baptized in it in 1932 it has since
been rebuilt and restored when I last
visited in 1989 Most of the history is
now I believe in Phoenix where I had to
apply for a duplicate baptism certificate

Just returned from Jerome. My Mother and her 2 brothers lived there from 1917 to 1953. There last names were Isais or Ysais the spelling of the last name could have been either way. They've all passed away now and I'm looking for history on small mine owners or family members that lived in Jerome in the early 1920's.

I was born in Jerome Arizona in 1940 and lived there until the end of WWII than we moved to Fresno, CA. I had many relatives and associates there and can still remember many adventures and other stories that I heard from my parents, uncles, cousins, and other relationships. Would like to hear from other Jerome natives and share experiences and memories. Thank you.

I live just outside of New Orleans, La. and have some friends, Zack and Melody who live in Cottonwood. I've been lucky enough to have visited them twice in the past few years.
They've taken me to Jerome both times and that town has always left the biggest impression on me. I love the views, the history and even the terrifying drive up the steep corkscrew road that winds up the mountain into Jerome. There's such a free, breezy feeling when you're there. I would love to retire there.

I visited Jerome on 9/23/08 and had dinner with some friends from Baltimore at the Asylum Restaurant in the Grand Hotel. After driving around trying to find the right street that led us there, I thought did we really want to do this.It turned out to be an unusual experience, coming from a community with diversity. I live in Claremont, CA. (a college town). The uniqueness of Jerome reminded me of my own town's in that there was a diverse community of people living in Jerome. My partner's name is Jerome. So that made it more unusual an experience.

I visited Jerome for the first time in November, 2008 - not a month ago, and know it is where I want to relocate and live out my years. I am an artist, musician, singer, poet and resturaunteur. I have a great idea for a new cultural establishment. I'm curious if any of the store fronts I saw on Main st and central downtown are for rent, lease or purchase. Is there a reliable commercial real eatate agent in town? Please respond here. thank you.

Hi - I realize I'm replying to a post from last year, but just curious as to whether you ever received any feedback?
I'm interested in living loft-style above my own retail store. May have to take up a drive there one of these weekends...thanks!

There are 3-4 store fronts available...wait and there will be more. Tourism depends on disposable income...that's a commodity in short supply.
Most real estate agents for Jerome operate out of Sedona or Cottonwood

I visited in the summer of 2005 but only for an evening stop. It was absolutely surreal and I've thought of the place ever since. Would love to return and get a daytime perspective...but the starry night views into the abyss below along with the rustic lamp posts coupled with the bustling bars and concert hall seriously made a lasting impact, enough of one that I have a longing to go back!

Just got back from Arizona - drove from Prescott to Jerome - ate at the Haunted Hamburger (yum!) after receiving good reviews from a local. Yes, the height and the way to get to Jerome from Prescott was alarming to someone who had not expected it. I would like to go back another time, so that I can see what I was afraid to look at. Your web site does not include The Haunted Hamburger - so I thought I would give it a plug.

My grandparents and parents lived in Jerome from 1913 to 1995. There names were CSP and Charlotte Gardner, CSP worked for the mines. John and Elizabeth McMillan, ran the Mine Museum and was a mayor. Milton Scott funeral owner/furniture store. Any of these names ring a bell??? My dad and mom were born there and my dad was wondering if Toci was an electrician for the utility company. I was born in Jerome (William Scott Krznarich) in 1939. My family anglicized our name to Kersnar in the 1950s. Other than knowing I was born there, I know little about Jerome. My paternal grandparents homesteaded in Mesa before Arizona was a state.

For our family, Jerome is in our blood. Ysmael Montes came from Mexico to work in the mines. He established the Yavapai Meat Market and made a good living for his family. My grandmother, Mary Montes married Roman Morales and started their family there. My father Mike Morales and two of his brothers were born there and have (had) many wonderful stories to tell. Two sisters who died in infancy are buried in the Clarkdale Cemetary at the foot of Jerome Mountain. I hope to instill the love of "our home" in our children and grandchildren.

Hi, my name is Brittani. I visited Jerome this past weekend, which was quite the trek, considering I'm from Southern New Mexico. I had been planning this trip for four months, both to visit Jerome, and to see A Perfect Circle in concert, in Phoenix. My most favorite, and most anticipated part of the trip, was visiting Caduceus Cellars in Jerome. I'm looking to get away from my hometown, and Jerome just seems like a nice place to try out. If anyone has any information on someone trying to move there, such as places to rent, or places that may be hiring, that information would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I live in the Valley 'Mesa' and have wanted to live in Jerome for awhile now. Jobs come up all the time in the service biz, rentals are another thing,,, pricey . Craigslist is the only place Ive found to look for rentals but I guess you could always call a Realtor and see what they could suggest. Good luck with you search. Laura
